November 10-11 - 2017 Cave City, Kentucky

November 10, we moved to Cave City, Kentucky. A quiet, uneventful day, except for one thing… it got COLD! It got down to 24 degrees F./-5 degrees C. At the campground, we had to sign a paper, saying that if we didn’t get the water hook-up turned off by 5 pm, we would except responsibility for paying for frost damage. This was our first night of camping in freezing weather. We survived, and no frost damage – to the waterline or the camper.
Today – November 11 – was cave day. We came to Kentucky to visit the world’s largest (known) cave. Mammoth Cave is 412 miles/663 km long, and they are discovering new tunnels every year.

We had 2 park rangers, who led the tour, and told us some things about the cave. But most of the time, we walked through narrow and/or steep paths through the cave. Some places, we had to duck. Some places we had to go down steep steps (280 before we got to the first “room” in the cave). Some places we had to suck in our stomachs or walk sideways.

On most of the tour, the walls, ceilings, floors were limestone (kalksten).

At the very end of the tour we saw stalagmites (stalagmitter) and stalactites (stalaktitter). I thought this was the best part of the trip😊

Other than that we have taken it easy the last couple of days. We have spent some time walking around in the area, looking at houses/yards, checking stores etc. etc.

PS (from JJ)
When you travel you can't help make comparisons to the world you know.
Bigger, smaller, better, worse, the same etc. etc.
One thing (of many) that is different are the trains.
Trains in the US are mostly used for transporting freight (passengers only when they don't get in the way for freight, I think 😊)
We are camping right next to the railroad tracks this time, so why not cease the moment.

There is no exact rules for how long a train can be.
The normal maximum is around 2 miles long / 3,2 km. About 200 cars!!
Some cities will not allow you to block the road for more than 10 minutes when you go through their town !!😊

This video shows the first part of a train that passed by. It goes on for quite a while longer!
