October 23-24 - 2017 Dumfries, Virginia

We moved to Dumfries, Virginia on October 23 (30 miles/50 km south of Washington DC). It was a short move – about 100 miles (150 km). Never the less, it was eventful.

We started by driving right through the middle of Baltimore, Maryland. Some of the neighborhoods were not the best, and at one point we realized that we were driving through “Ravens” (American football team from Baltimore) territory, with Minnesota license plates, on the morning after the Vikings beat the Ravens! If that wasn’t bad enough, we realized, that if we broke down, I had a Vikings jersey on, and JJ had Vikings sweatpants on! We even drove past the Ravens stadium! But – we didn’t break down, and we survived driving through downtown in a big city with the camper – so it was one more experience to add to the list.

Next, we stopped at a Walmart store in the Washington DC area. We had ordered a mattress on-line, to be sent to that store. The mattress in our camper has been going bad since day one (even though it was brand new). (After the first night we slept on it, there were dents, where we had laid. By the second night, they were deep valleys. And they have been getting worse and worse.) Picking up the mattress worked great, and we slept much better last night😊

As long as I can remember, I have been hearing about Washington DC – people and places there; history and current events…. The city is very important for the country. This is where the most important political decisions are made. This is where the power is. It is a big part of our identity as Americans. Not all Americans get to see their capital city, because of the great distances in the country.  I feel privileged, that I finally got to visit.

On Tuesday, we decided to orientate ourselves in the city. There is so much to see here, we wanted to get our bearings, before we got started. We got on a hop-on-hop-off bus tour. First, we took the tour all the way around. Then we took it around, and got off at some of the stops. Here are some of the things we saw…

Buildings we all know and recognize:

The White House

The Capitol

Buildings of power:

Department of Commerce

Department of treasury

Department of Agriculture
(JJ was fond of this one)
Impressive architecture:

The National Archives

The first building built to house the Smithsonian Institute
Now used as the Arts and Industries Museum

First National Post Office
(Now a Trump hotel)

Union Station

Monuments:

Washington Memorial
Lincoln Memorial
You may have heard of the Watergate building…. We parked in their parking garage. So even parking our car was “historical”.

This was our introduction to Washington, DC.
We are planning to spend a lot more time.
