May 8-9 - 2018 Mariposa, California

On May 8, we moved to Mariposa, California (90 miles/ ca. 140km). We did so, to get closer to Yosemite National Park.

I remember when I was researching, where we should go and what we should see on our trip, that I thought “what is so special about Yosemite?” I couldn’t really figure out why so many people think it is so special. We went to Yosemite today (May 9), to see for ourselves.
No doubt, it is a beautiful place. There are mountains…

 There are trees….
There are a couple of nice waterfalls…

A “lake”…
Mirror Lake (which was hardly a lake at all)
But we have seen all these things already – usually bigger, prettier, more impressive.

There was a lot of water flowing and green all around (which was nice after so many weeks in very dry places).

And we were lucky enough to see this bear cub (bjørneunge) beside the road. (Were kind of uneasy, wondering where the mother was….)
To be fair, I have to say that we couldn’t see the sequoia grove (bigger trees), because it was being renovated. We couldn’t drive the famous Tioga Road (which goes over very high mountains), because it was still closed because of snow. We chose not to do one of the classic overlooks (Glacier Point), because it was over an hour drive (one way) to see it, plus there was road construction, that would have made the trip even longer. So, we didn’t see all of the sights.

But we both agreed – we still don’t know why so many people think Yosemite is so special. (It won’t be on our “top 10” list, but then again…it wouldn’t be called “Top 10”, if every place got on it😊) Maybe we have seen too many mountains, and too much nature the past few weeks. Good thing we are taking a break and going to a big city (San Francisco) from here!
