April 5 - 2018 Tucson, Arizona

Yesterday, Wednesday the 4th, we took a short detour on our way to Tucson.
We went back in time. We stopped in Tombstone, Arizona (betyder gravsten – noget af et navn).

The most famous shootout in the history of the Wild West took place in Tombstone on October 26, 1881.  It was a duel between 3 of the Earp brothers, Virgil, Morgan and Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday (that day all lawmen) and a group called the Outlaw Cowboys.  The Gunfight at the OK Corral.

After less than a minute of shooting 3 of the cowboys were dead and 2 ran away.
Tombstone has understood how to make the most out of it. There is a whole street built as a street in a western town 140 years ago. They have several daily reenactments (gengivelser) of the gunfight. You may call it a tourist trap (turistfælde), but actually a nice one.

Today, Thursday April 5th, we felt like we were on a different planet! We were surrounded by vegetation (planter) that was totally foreign to us. We didn’t recognize ANY of it. There were no trees. There was no grass. There weren’t even dandelions (mælkebøtter)! It was strange to be in a place, where you recognize nothing. Strange, but very interesting.

We came to Tucson, because we wanted to see the giant cactuses – the Saguaro (Kæmpekaktus). This is one of the only areas, where this impressive (imponerende) plant grows, and the only place, that it grows so abundantly (i så store mængder). The Saguaro can get up to two hundred years old. After 75 years it will start developing the arms. Birds live in them. Woodpeckers (hakkespætter) will make the nests an if they abandon them owls (ugler), bats (flagermus) and other birds will move in.

We were prepared to see the saguaros, but we were not prepared for all the other plant and animal life, that is so different from what we know.

This is a dead Saguaro.

We knew that we would see Saguaros in Saguaro National Park, but we did not know, that they would be in our back yard at the campground. We are neighbors to Tucson Mountain Park, and we have enjoyed walks on the trails there, and the view from our campsite. And, last night we fell asleep to the sound of coyotes howling.

This is a cholla. Both JJ and I got "attacked" by this
kind of cactus. They have long, sharp thorns!

It was very warm in the afternoon, 93F/33C, so we decided to do something, that would get us out of the heat. We went to see a movie. To continue our theme of the day (being on a different planet), we saw the newest Star Wars film (hadn’t gotten around to seeing it, and found a movie theater, that was still showing it). Star Wars VIII: The Last Jedi

It was a nice place with 12 theaters. Our theater (sal) could seat at least 300 people (we were 10 !).
Big screen and nice chairs and the whole thing was $6.50 (Dkk 40-45) for BOTH of us. 😊

After a $1.00 (DKK 6-7) senior rebate 😊.
We have been following the Star Wars movies for 40 years now. And we liked this one too. It was almost like it was the last one. But movie IX in 2019 will be the last in the three trilogies so it is going to be interesting to see how that will round the whole thing up.
Last but definitely not least. We finally got out of our current insurance company’s “scam” (fupnumre).
It has been horrible almost from the first day. After 2 weeks in September they cancelled our policy.
Raised the premium from $700 to $ 1100 and now only liability (ansvar).
They made mistake after mistake and kept sending small extra bills after recalculating!!
They even forgot to reinstate (genaktivere) the insurance after storage in Florida, so we drove 2000 miles (3200km) through 7 states without liability insurance (lovpligtig ansvarsforsikring).
The last drop was when we should renew the policy this week. The new premium will now be almost
$1300!! (Ca. DKK 8000) We got ahold of Phil’s new insurance company in Watertown (he changed too) and signed up with them today.
Their premium for the same coverage: $ 515.00!!! (Ca. DKK 3300).

Sunset last night - 50 feet (15m) from our camper.
A perfect end to an almost perfect day!
