April 7-8 - 2018 Phoenix, Arizona

We came to Phoenix to visit our nephew Philip (my brother Philip’s oldest). We have not seen him too often, since he moved away for Minnesota – about 15 years ago. He was traveling around with the US Marines for about 5 years, and then moved to places out of state, so we are rarely in Minnesota at the same time as he is. It has been nice to spend some time with him this weekend. Philip has a new girlfriend – Jamie. We met her and her daughter Charlie on Saturday, April 7.

We all went to the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix. It was a place with lots of cactus, and other desert plants. Many of the cactuses were blooming. It was very nice.

It was very warm in the Phoenix sun. Luckily, we did as the natives do – went early. By noon, the heat was getting to us. Jamie brought Charlie home for a nap, and the rest of us went to get something to eat. After that, Philip took us to “the mystery castle”, which is a house built in the 1940’s, using only recycled materials (genbrugsmaterialer). (Someone was a visionary (forud for sin tid)!)

The place was huge. I wouldn’t say it was pretty, but it was impressive. Incredible, all the ideas that the builder had for using different materials in different ways. He even used car parts!

We met up for supper with Jamie and my cousin Marleny and her husband Matty. I have not seen Marleny since she was about 5, but I used to babysit her when she was small, and I lived in St. Cloud. She is all grown up now! It was fun to see her again and hear a little about her life.
Sunday, we met Philip, Jamie and Charlie for breakfast. Later we went to Jamie’s apartment to hang out by the pool, and Philip made us some good hamburgers on the grill.

We may not have stopped in Phoenix, if Philip hadn’t been here, but we are glad we did.
